In a world designed around the neurotypical brain, technology can help put neurodivergents on a more level playing field.
A neurodivergent mind is rarely quiet. Signals flood in constantly — and technology can reduce that load by removing the dependency of remembering every day-to-day necessity. And it’s not just the necessities — when the mind is overloaded, remembering how to do a task can be just as challenging as remembering the task itself.
Masking is the attempt to appear as neurotypical as possible — for the comfort of others. But masking doesn’t allow a neurodivergent’s nervous system to expend the buildup of energy that naturally accumulates. That buildup finds its release through stims — self-stimulatory behaviors that help regulate the nervous system. When masking is reduced, stims can improve.
When the right tools reduce the need to mask — when tasks get handled, communication lands the way it was meant to, and sleep improves — the load on the nervous system lightens. What’s left is more authenticity, less stress, and a nervous system that can finally operate closer to its natural state.
That’s what technology for ND minds is supposed to do.
UMNTech covers two things. First, the types of technology that tend to help — not specific products, but categories of tools and what to look for in each. Second, as UMN grows, specific tools that have been personally tested by UMN or validated by UMNTogether community members — clearly sourced so you know where the assessment came from.
